Top 10 Ways To Keep Your Family Healthy

Raising a family definitely isn’t easy. All parents are busy, after all, and so are their children. In this world where time is a commodity, staying healthy can be difficult but is incredibly important.

Although we often see our children as carefree and happy-go-lucky, just like us, they get sick and feel stress. The trouble is, unlike adults, most don’t know how to help themselves. This is where you come in. As the parent, it is your responsibility to create the overall well-being of your kids. With that in mind, here are ten things that you can do to keep your whole family healthy.

1. Clean Out The Cupboards

Children don’t like being told what to do, I mean, adults don’t either, right? This is why it’s important that you give them a choice. The trouble is, if you let your kids pick between a healthy snack and an unhealthy one, they are very likely to choose the one full of sugar and fat. So, make sure that the options only allow for healthy choices. For our family, we make sure we don’t bring in extra sugar or unhealthy snacks, instead we set out fruits like apples and bananasand have yogurt or veggies at the toddler’s level in the fridge. A simple change, but it makes a huge difference!

2. Prepare The Meals Together

Cooking dinner by yourself may be the easy option, but inviting your kids to help is the more rewarding one. As well as showing your children how to make their own healthy meals, cooking together provides an opportunity for you to promote healthy eating habits. Plus, a child is much more likely to eat a meal, even a nutritious one, if they’ve had a hand in preparing it.

3. Stop Clearing The Plates

From a very young age, most children are taught to clear their plates. Some are even told that they won’t get another meal until they’ve eaten what is in front of them. Although this may seem an effective way to keep your kids from wasting food, it often does more harm than good. Once your child is full, any bites they take after that contribute to overeating. Instead of making your children eat, you should teach them when to stop.

4. Go For Regular Checkups

Illnesses, injuries, and other issues aren’t always obvious, even to a parent. Because of this, it’s vital that you take your kids for regular checkups with their pediatrician. Many problems go unnoticed for a very long time because these appointments aren’t made or stuck to. The earlier a health condition is spotted, the better it can be treated. Doctors are those best equipped to help you keep your kids healthy, so make sure you allow them to do so.

5. Exercise As A Family

Kids learn from copying and mimicking the actions of their parents. This means that, if your little ones see you lounging about all day, they’ll think it’s okay for them to do the same. Everyone needs exercise for good overall health, so encourage your kids to be more active by doing so yourself. There are many workouts that you could do as a family, including swims, soccer games, and bike rides. The more fun the activity you pick, the better your kids will view exercise.

6. Adopt A Furry Friend

When bicycles and soccer balls can’t get your kids off the couch, you should turn to something a little furrier. Like humans, pets require regular exercise to stay healthy. If you choose to adopt a dog, therefore, your kids will have to walk and play with them to be responsible owners. Pets can also improve your health in other ways. For example, having a dog or cat around the house can reduce the likelihood of your little ones developing asthma when they grow up.

7. Split The Chores

Chores create stress if only 1 person is handling them. Because everyone contributes to them, everyone needs to help with them, even your spouse. For this reason, you should create a chore chart and assign everyone in your home chores to do. Even the youngest members of your family can do something, such as putting their toys away. Remember it is proven that we learn best when – it is modeled, done together, then done alone with lots of praise for effort and getting it right!

8. Develop Healthy Sleep Habits

As important as it may be to stay active, you also need plenty of rest for good overall wellbeing. No one functions properly on too little sleep, especially young children. This is why it’s so crucial that you develop healthy sleep habits for them. Young children need around ten hours rest every single night, so, if your kids have to wake up at seven, then make sure that they’re fast asleep by nine.

9. Support Down Days

Education is very important. However, everyone needs a break now and then, including children. Homework, tests, and fallings out with friends can all make school incredibly stressful. Adults get mental or down days, give your kids one too. If your kids are asking for a day off, you should seriously consider letting them have it. Just like us big humans, a chance to recharge the batteries helps us all feel less stressed and function better.

10. Set “No Phone” Zones

Although technology has made life better in many different ways, it can have a negative effect too. Social media, in particular, can cause your kids stress and might even encourage them to adopt unhealthy habits. Starting at any screen for too long can also cause eye damage, as well as harm your sleep cycle. Because of this, you should set areas in your home where phones aren’t allowed. These might include the dinner table and the bedrooms.
