Whether you’re depressed, anxious, or just feeling low, taking care of yourself can often be the last thing you want to do. However, self care is so important, and if you let it slide you could actually end up feeling even worse in the long run. Here, we’re going to give you a few ways you can take care of yourself when you’re feeling low.

Write It Out

Writing out your thoughts and feelings can help you to get everything out on to paper and make you feel better virtually right away. Think of it as a free writing exercise. Don’t think too much about what you’re writing, and don’t edit or sensor yourself. You can even do it on a computer if that’s better for you. Reading back on what you’ve written can sometimes give you a deeper insight into your mind and figure out how to feel better.

Talk To Somebody Who Cares

Whether it’s a friend, family member, or even a pet, talking to somebody who cares can make the world of difference. Don’t be ashamed of your feelings. Talking to somebody can be the simplest way of feeling like you’ve taken a load off your shoulders.

Deal With Sources of Stress

If you know what your sources of stress are, work out how you can do something about them. For example, if you’re taking on too much at work, let it be known and come up with a plan to fix it. If you suffered an accident and you’re injured, having a reputable company to help you get a settlement  can also be a load off your mind. Figure out what’s triggering you and what you can do about it.

Get Your Body Moving

Even if you just go for a walk around the block, get out there and move a little. Don’t commit to anything or make your goals too big. Just keep walking until you feel like stopping.

Take A Shower Or Bath

A powerful act of self care is keeping yourself clean and smelling good. Get in the shower or even take a bath, and try to be present. Feel the water on your skin and pay attention to all of the things you can smell. It can be quite therapeutic.

Practice Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is very simple and can be done from your bed or the couch. Most of us take shallow breaths and this signals to the body that we are stressed. By practicing deep breathing, you’ll be able to let some of the tension in your body go. Be mindful of how you’re breathing more often and it will make a difference.

Take A Nap

Naps have been proven to be great for health, so try taking a 20 minute nap in the middle of the day to see if it helps your mood.

Try Something New

Maybe you’re stuck in a rut. Don’t be afraid to try new things! Is there something you’ve considered for a while but not actually tried? Get out there and do it!
